Steam Locomotives of the South African Railways: Volume 1 & 2 by D.F. Holland are a history of steam locomotives of South Africa over a period of nearly 100 years, from 1859 to 1955.
Volume 1 deals with the history of locomotives of all the individual railways, other than those of 2ft narrow gauge which came into being prior to the Act of Union in 1910.
Volume 2 takes up the story from the formation of the South African Railways in that year and covers all the locomotives subsequently introduced up to the last steam locomotive design in 1955.
