The Romance of the Portuguese in Abyssinia; an account of the adventurous journeys of the Portuguese to the empire of Prester John, their assistance to Ethiopia in its struggle against Islam and their subsequent efforts to impose their own influence and religion 1490-1633 by Charles F. Rey begins with the picture of two stout-hearted Portuguese gentlemen starting out at the behest of their king to search the world for the fabulous empire of the mythical Prester John. One man dies on the way, the other presses on reaching the dominions of the Negus of Abyssinia after three years of wandering. He believed he had reached his goal.
