The Rock-Engravings Of Griqualand & Bechuanaland, South Africa by Maria Wilman is a historical introduction of the study of rock engravings and their distribution throughout Southern Africa followed by: a detailed account of their physical features and pre-history; the accepted classification of engravings; imitations and chronology, which includes a discussion of estimated age, the tools used, the artists, and conjectured meaning. A bibliography, an index and 16 figures complete the text. This is followed by 70 plates most of which have two or more photographic illustrations, usually of a rock-environment, with associated close-up of the engraving.
