They represent some of the recreations, legal and literary of a colonial judge. Laurence says in his preface that the press received his previous literary endeavour kindly and "..with such complete indifference by the book buying public - if such an entity still exists - that I understand some 'remainders' are still procurable on very reasonable terms." This just goes to show that nothing has changed 100 years later.
