The Material Culture of the Peoples of the Gwembe Valley - Barrie Reynolds

The Material Culture of the Peoples of the Gwembe Valley by Barrie Reynolds, formerly Keeper of Ethnography at the Rhodes Livingstone Museum, has given us a third study of the Valley Tonga, occupants of the Gwembe section of the Zambezi River valley. His account deals with the period before 1958 when the Gwembe people were subject to a major resettlement to remove them from the area soon to be flooded by Lake Kariba. It is based on six months fieldwork, centered largely in four chieftaincies on the northern bank of the Zambezi in what is now Zambia. This was supplemented by a brief stay in one small chieftaincy on the southern or Rhodesian bank.  The book has one folding map, black and white photos and many line drawings.
